Winfield is a 150-year-old community of over 8,000 residents occupying about 2.5 square miles in the western suburbs of Chicago, in DuPage county. It is primarily a bedroom community with small retail stores, and no heavy industry. The major employer within the village limits is the 375-bed Central DuPage Hospital complex which has a daytime population of 2,500. Glen Ellyn has 31 miles of streets. The closest surrounding municipalities are Wheaton, Carol Stream, West Chicago and Warrenville. I like to think of Winfield as The Museum Village, anchored by Cantigny on the south, and Klein Creek Farm on the north. Winfield was incorporated as a village in 1921 with the weak-mayor / strong-council form of government. Fortunately, it has the limited legal powers of a Dillon Rule --not a Home Rule-- community. Other statistics are available.
Winfield is located about 27 miles due West of downtown Chicago. This is evident from the DuPage County house numbering system embraced by Winfield in which house numbers begin with 27w... or 0n... or 0s... indicating how many miles West, North, or South they are of the origin point of the City of Chicago's numbering system which since 1908 radiates from the intersection of Madison and State streets in downtown Chicago.

Glen Ellyn History
|
Winfield's modern history begins when was first settled in the 1840s by German immigrants who named the community Fredericksburg, after Frederick The Great of Prussia-- the largest German kingdom. Many of the old tombstones in the cemetery at Gary's Mill and Summit streets are inscribed in German. During the anti-German hysteria of the first world war, the name of the community was changed to Winfield, the name of the township in which the village principally lays. Some say that the name of the township and hence the village comes from Winfield Scott, but I have my doubts.
During 1957, the first International Geophysical Year, scientists began searching for the astronomical center of the universe. Finding this place serves as a natural reference point for measuring distances in space. The point is known in theory as AU0, that is the zero point for the near end of the Astronomical Unit tape measure, although its exact physical location is not known precisely. Due to the limited instruments of that time, the best they could find was that the point they were looking for is somewhere in southern Wisconsin or northern Illinois. Since that time improved instruments using satellites, and especially the deployment of the Global Positioning System, have allowed them to narrow the zone and they now know that the astronomical center of the universe is somewhere within a 10km zone that covers Winfield. As funding permits more accurate research and measurement, we expect scientists to confirm what the residents here has always known in their hearts: Winfield is the Center of the Universe.

Because of the nature of overlapping independent jurisdictions that characterize Illinois local government, many services that people think are provided by the Village of Winfield are actually provided by other independent governmental bodies, not answerable to the elected officials of Winfield, and controlled by their own independently-elected or appointed boards. These include the Winfield Public Library, the Winfield Fire Protection District, and the West Chicago Mosquito District. We buy our water from the DuPage Water Commission and the sewerage plant we partially own is operated by the City of West Chicago. Winfield lays within two high school districts: West Chicago #94 and Wheaton #200; in three townships: Winfield, Milton, and Wayne; in three elementary school districts: West Chicago #33, Winfield #34 and Wheaton #200; and in four park districts: Winfield, West Chicago, Carol Stream and Wheaton.
